Who we are
A Firm Grounded in East Malaysian Legal Practice
Legaris was built around the particular realities of practising law in Sabah — the land rights, the local frameworks, and the relationships that shape how matters move forward here.

How Legaris Came to Be
Legaris was established in Kota Kinabalu by a small group of practitioners who had spent years navigating the particular complexities of East Malaysian law — land rights, local business frameworks, and cross-community commercial relationships. The firm was built around the belief that clients deserve to understand what is happening with their matter, why each step is taken, and what the likely outcomes look like in plain terms.
Working from an office on Jalan Gaya, the team draws on deep familiarity with Sabah's legal landscape, including native customary rights, the local authority approval structure, and the commercial realities facing small and growing businesses in the region.
The name Legaris reflects the firm's commitment to a structured, principled approach — rooted in careful preparation and clear communication. Every matter that comes through the door, however large or small, is handled with the same standard of care.

What guides us
Our Practice Values
Clear Communication
Legal matters carry weight, and uncertainty about where things stand adds to the difficulty. We keep clients informed at each stage, in language that doesn't require a legal background to follow.
Careful Preparation
Our approach is thorough before it is fast. We believe that most outcomes are shaped well before a hearing or negotiation — in the quality of preparation that precedes it. We don't cut corners on this.
Considered Judgment
We advise on the options as we see them, including the ones that may be harder to hear. Our role is to help clients make well-informed decisions, not to tell them only what they'd prefer.

How we work
Standards We Hold Ourselves To
The conduct of our practice is governed by the rules of the Malaysian Bar and shaped by our own internal expectations.
Bar Membership
All practising members are members of the Malaysian Bar, subject to its ethical and professional conduct rules.
Client Confidentiality
Client information is handled under strict professional confidentiality obligations at every stage of an engagement.
Document Management
Case files are maintained in a structured system with version control and controlled access. Nothing is left unarchived.
Written Fee Agreements
All fee arrangements are set out in writing and agreed before work begins. No charges are added without prior discussion.
Regular Case Updates
Clients receive updates at agreed intervals throughout their engagement, so nothing develops without their knowledge.
Local Authority Knowledge
The team maintains current working familiarity with Sabah's local authority processes, which reduces delays in administrative matters.
Legal Practice in East Malaysia
The legal landscape in Sabah carries specific characteristics that distinguish it from practice in Peninsular Malaysia. Land tenure under the Sabah Land Ordinance, the status of native customary rights, and the involvement of multiple local authorities in business licensing all require practitioners who have engaged directly with these systems over time.
At Legaris, our work is concentrated in the areas where this local knowledge has the most practical bearing. In land matters, understanding how boundary disputes interact with native title claims — and how those claims are received by the relevant authority — shapes how a case is approached from the outset. In business licensing, knowing which approvals are required at state versus local level prevents delays that can derail new operations before they begin.
Debt recovery in East Malaysia similarly involves navigating court processes that benefit from local familiarity, particularly where the debtor is operating across state lines or where enforcement requires coordination with multiple parties. Our team handles each of these contexts with the same attention to preparation and client communication that underpins everything we do at Legaris.
